Term Life Insurance
Term life pays a death benefit if the insured person passes away during a set period, such as 10, 20, or 30 years.
Purpose
- Replace lost income for a family.
- Help pay off a mortgage or other debts.
- Protect children until they are grown.
Benefits
- Usually the lowest-cost way to buy a large amount of coverage.
- Simple to understand.
- Premiums are often level for the term chosen.
Costs
- Premiums depend on age, health, tobacco use, coverage amount, and term length.
- Rates generally rise the older you are when you apply.
Limitations
- Coverage ends when the term ends unless renewed or converted.
- No cash value in most term policies.
- Renewal, if offered, is usually much more expensive.
Risks
- You could outlive the policy and receive nothing back.
- If premiums are not paid, coverage may lapse.
- Health changes later may make new coverage harder to get.
